A Brief History of the Zonta Club of Gawler Inc. District 23, Area 2. Club 1410

The Zonta Club of Gawler Inc was Chartered on 1st May 1993.

SOM club: Zonta Club of Para Districts Inc with Naomi Arnold as Chairman of the Committee. Charter was presented by Mrs Bobbie Porter, D23 Governor at Gawler on May 1st 1993 . The club had 35 Charter members. Charter President: Yvonne Chamberlain: Vice President : Chris Dry , Treasurer: Judy Glastonbury Secretary: Lyn Lillecrapp

The Club Charter was the Zonta Club of Gawler and Districts. The name was changed to the Zonta Club of Gawler & Barossa and then Zonta Club of Gawler. inc to reflect the local membership of the club.

Meetings: Held on the 1st Monday of each month, except December when a Christmas function was held. Meetings were held at the Gawler Arms Hotel, Julian Tce Restaurant, Gawler Health Service and later convened at Cafe Nova Gawler. Meetings are currently held on the second Wednesday of each month.

Club Board and Committees: For most of its history the Club Board has comprised : President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and two Directors.

Membership: Membership has decreased from the original 35 charter members and currently the club has fourteen members. Membership meetings have been held in March for the past four years and new members have been welcomed.

Advocacy Projects: Members of the Club have been actively engaged with the A2 Combined Advocacy group and attended the White Ribbon Breakfast, ASCO events as well as other events organised to address issues for women in South Australia.

Service Projects: Service Projects have addressed the Zonta priorities of health, education, and economic self-sufficiency of women and girls in the Gawler community. Service projects have included scholarships for young women inn secondary schools, emergency kits for young women in schools and the successful production of a book recognising the work and contribution of women in the Gawler community. Members have also supported the Gawler Community House, contributed to Xmas hampers for members in the community and worked with other groups to provide equipment for the Gawler Health centre.

Fund raising Activities: The club has successfully raise funds through Quiz nights, Raffles for Xmas special events and significants days, Fashion Parades, as well as participating in local combined events to support women and girls in the community.

Area Activities: The club has represented at all Area workshops since the Charter and jointly hosted a number of workshops.

District Activities: The Club had represented at District conferences. Treasurer for District Conference in 2003, Naomi Arnold( Reschke) has served as Area Director( 1990-92) Lt Governor( 1992-1994) and District 23 Governor( 1994-1996) District Foundation Ambassador 2000-2006. Alison Russell Area Director 2002-2004.

District Projects: The Club has supported all District 23 Projects including Self Defence Course for young women, Breast Cushions, Birthing Kits for the Birthing Kit Foundation, Australia, and the Yarra Wadi Indigenous Puppet Project.

International Activities: The Club has represented at International Conventions and members Naomi Arnold ( Reschke) has served on the International Board 1996-1998. Served as Chairman of the Young Women in Public Affairs Award 1998-2000 and a member of the Zonta International Foundation Development Committee 2012-2014

Zonta International Foundation: Each year the Club contributes 1/3 of funds raised to the Zonta International Foundation. Some members make individual contributions.
