The hotel now known as the Criterion Tavern was originally known as the Engine and Driver. It started trading in 1858 at its current location 18 Nineteenth Street, Gawler South (then known as Murray Street, Bassett Town), opposite the Gawler Railway Station.

On the 14th September 1863 the proprietor Mr Catchlove applied to the Bench of Magistrates quarterly meeting to “alter the name of his house at Bassett Town from the Engine and Driver to the Criterion Hotel” (South Australian Register 15 Sep 1863). By March 1864 extensive building works had been undertaken and the Gawler Correspondent to The Adelaide Express reported that the the hotel had been "improved and beautified so as to form one of the most picturesque buildings of the kind in the colony" (The Adelaide Express 9 Mar 1864).
