William Bassett was born in 1833 [the son of William Bassett and Elizabeth (nee Vosper)] and was the brother of George Vosper Bassett, born 20th September 1820, and Susan Jane Bassett, born 1846 and married a Mr Orchard in St Georges Church Gawler on 3rd October 1867.

William married Johanne Louise Emilie Klaucke [born 1833] on 4th September 1861 in St Georges Church Gawler. They had 6 children:

Frederich William Bassett born 9th July 1862;

William John Horace Bassett born 1st July 1863;

Albert Victor Bassett born 15th April 1866;

Herbert Vosper Bassett - born 29th April 1868 [and who married Florence Ethlinda Ames on 9th October 1895];

Henry Vosper Bassett born 29th April 1868;

and Rupert George Bassett on 9th September 1871.

Bassett had crops growing on the land which eventually became the Gawler Railway Station. He bought the land from John Harvey. This area eventually became known as Bassett Town, which he laid out on 24th March 1858.

Walter Duffield built his Bassett Town flour mill in 1867.

William Bassett died 4th December 1909.
