Higgins Alfred James B.A. Dip. Ed.
|Type of person||Individual|
|Date of birth|| 1909
Alfred (Alf) was born on 1st November 1909 at Sister Matthew’s Nursing Home at Milang SA.
I was a 1st Year student at Gawler High School in 1940, and Mr Higgins was my class teacher teaching English and Latin. Mr Flaherty was the Headmaster. WW2 was in progress and I understand that Mr Higgins spent some years serving Australia in the R.A.A.F. In 1964 or possibly earlier, he was Principal of Gawler High School at the new location on Barnet Road, Evanston. (Previously he was employed at the Port Augusta High School.)
In 1966 or sooner, he welcomed the newly formed Parents and Friends Association [a strong and enthusiastic band of parents] which followed the then defunct Old Scholars Association.
1967 was to be the Diamond Jubilee year for Gawler High School and in 1966 preparations began to raise funds for new decorative iron entrance gates for the School, which were declared open during the 3 days of celebration to mark the Jubilee. Staff, students and parents worked hard for the Jubilee events.
Mr Higgins remained Principal until about 1971. I believe that he retired and went to reside near his family at Kingston SE. He died on 15th September 1994 at the Kingston Soldiers Memorial Hospital and is buried in the Kingston Cemetery.
